Frequently Asked Questions
What is youth hockey?
Youth hockey is a structured sport for children and teens, typically starting at age 4 or 5 for skating lessons and age 6 for introductory hockey programs, with participation extending through high school.
The sport is considered safe, with injury rates lower than football, soccer, and basketball, as contact is restricted until the PeeWee level (age 11-12) and fighting is strictly prohibited at all youth levels.
Age classifications generally follow two-year groups such as Mites (U8), Squirts (U10), PeeWees (U12), Bantams (U14), and Midgets (U18), with body checking permitted only at the 14U level and above. In the Upper Peninsula, programs range from recreational house leagues to competitive travel teams, with seasons typically running from September or October through February or March.
Equipment includes a helmet with a face mask, mouth guard, neck guard, shin guards, elbow pads, gloves, hockey pants, skates, and a stick. TAYHA will do it's best to offer loaner equipment for beginners. Coaches are volunteer parents who must undergo background checks and complete USA Hockey, SafeSport, and certification training, while parents are often required to volunteer for roles such as team manager or clock monitor.
Does my child need to know how to skate?
For the 6U, 8U, and 10U levels, prior experience in skating is not required. Players will learn safe, basic ice skating skills at the 6U level and will progress to more advanced skills as age and time on the ice continues. For the 12U level, prior experience is not required, but it is recommended to complete one year of Learn to Play Hockey for a better experience. At 14U, players should have previous experience, as this level is more than competitive contact and checking is allowed.
Why do I need a USA Hockey registration?
All participants must complete the USA Hockey registration process prior to participation in a USA Hockey sanctioned event. Participant registration is complete when the individual member registration information and all appropriate fees are received, and the participant is processed by a USA Hockey member program.
